One of the first. things I see other teachers start deciding on at the end of the school year is their next classroom theme.
While choosing a classroom theme seems like an easy thing to do, in order to save money and time, choosing a timeless theme is important for veteran and new teachers alike.
Here are 5 tips for choosing a timeless classroom theme:
Start with a scheme not a theme:
When thinking of a classroom theme or decor pack, it is always best to start with a color scheme rather than a theme. Thinking of colors that you like and colors that go together helps to ensure that your classroom decor is timeless and not just trendy.
When you start with something trendy, it is likely that you will be ready to change everything about your decor when the trend is over. A color scheme with colors you love is likely to be something you will want for a longer time period AND you can keep a lot of the bins and furniture that you've purchased.
Keep the kids in mind:
When purchasing a decor bundle online or in store, be mindful of how well it will do in the classroom. For example, many decor bundles have text that is in all caps or are hard for children to read.
Other decor bundles I have seen have color schemes that completely eliminate color which is not always developmentally appropriate for the grade level you might be teaching.
Since a classroom is a shared space, making sure all parties benefit from the decor and space will make the decor a win-win!
Get more bang for your buck
When buying decor packs, make sure the bundle has enough decor pieces that can be used for a variety of different grade levels.
Since many of us teachers change grade levels and topics often, choosing a decor set that can grow with you will save you tons of money in the future.
Neutrals:
Choosing a theme that features at least one neutral color can be super helpful. In the classroom decor set that I picked years ago, black is the neutral color featured throughout the set. All of my bins and caddies are black to match.
I love the idea that if I decided to change my theme later on, I can still use all the same materials later on. This will save me so much time and money in the future.
Get fun!
My last piece of advice is to just have fun with decorating and choosing decor! If you love your space, it is likely that students will love it too. Since we spend so much time in our classrooms each year, having a theme that puts a smile on your face will help you love your space long term.
