Engaging and Time-Efficient Morning Meetings for Elementary Teachers

Morning meeting is my favorite classroom community building strategy of all time! There are so many benefits to having a daily morning meeting.

However, for busy classroom teachers, having a complicated morning meeting with too many extra parts can make it difficult to implement daily and can take entirely too much time out of the morning.

Here are a few tips for having an engaging, time-efficient morning meeting:

Morning message - Having a morning message in your morning meeting is really important. Your morning message encourages students to read and see examples of great grammar and good writing.

Morning messages can also serve as a way to inform your students about what the day will hold and what they will be learning.

Word of the day - Selecting an educational word of the day is an awesome way to build students vocabulary and can even serve as a conversation piece in class.

Fun National day - I love incorporating fun national days from the National Day Calendar in my morning meeting slides. Students love seeing what unique celebrations happen each day and it keeps them excited to see what the National day is each day.

Daily question - I love having an attendance or daily question. Each day I ask students a question based on a theme. It is an awesome opportunity to get to know students better and for them to get to know each other.

Each of the questions on my daily slides are based on the theme of the day. The themes I use are: Moody Monday, Talk about it Tuesday, Would you rather Wednesday, Think of Three Thursday, and Flashback Friday.

Each of these daily question themes require students to practice different skills like: social emotional awareness, conversation and listening skills, determining an opinion, listing items, and metacognition.

Time efficiency for morning meeting:

To maximize time, I eliminate the special greeting and other games that are typical of the standard morning meeting format. Instead, I take attendance and follow the slides each day to ensure everything is covered in a good time frame.
